Participation in Bavarian–Hungarian Autonomous Driving Project HU

In April and May 2026, members of the ELTE Department of Data Science and Engineering took part in the fourth Bavarian–Hungarian student project on autonomous driving. The initiative connected students from ELTE and four Bavarian universities through two workshops in Germany and Hungary.

Our PhD student Ali Abosinnee participated in the first workshop, held on 16–17 April at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. Following an introduction at the IFM – Institute for Driver Assistance and Connected Mobility, the participants visited the Aumovio testing grounds in Memmingen/Benningen, where they could observe how driver-assistance systems are tested and developed in an industrial setting.

During the visit, engineers presented field tests of a braking system and explained the sensors, monitoring systems, software, and data-processing procedures behind them. Participants also learned about the development and integration of sensors for vehicles, including the use of 3D printing in prototyping. A prototype vehicle equipped with RGB cameras, LiDAR, radar, and GPU-based onboard computing offered a tangible example of the technologies used in automated driving.

Back at IFM, the group tried a highly immersive driving-assistance simulator and learned how the data collected through simulation can support further development and analysis. The second day included a presentation on the institute’s research projects, industry collaborations, and doctoral programmes, followed by a hands-on Python session on implementing a lane-detection system.

The project continued on 7–8 May at Széchenyi István University in Győr, where Ali Abosinnee and István Koren represented our department. Using robotic cars, participants worked with simulation tools and ROS 2, visited the university’s laboratories and research vehicles, and took part in practical tests. Coordinated and supported by BAYHOST, the initiative brings together international collaboration, industrial insight, and practical learning in the rapidly developing field of autonomous mobility.
