Enterprise Resource Planning Systems

Enterprise Information Systems

The Enterprise Information Systems research area draws on the intersection of business process management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and data-driven digital transformation to explore how large organisations map, optimize and integrate their core operations. Our team advances theoretical and applied research on modern ERP ecosystems — with a particular focus on SAP S/4HANA and industrial-grade business solutions.

Key themes include:

  • Large-scale ERP system design and implementation: Our work examines best practices, architecture models and organisational change required for successful ERP roll-outs in enterprise settings.
  • SAP-based business process optimisation: We analyse how SAP platforms (including in-memory databases such as SAP HANA) and associated tools (ABAP, Fiori, cloud frameworks) can support real-time decision making, anomaly detection, and integration of advanced analytics.
  • Data-science integration into ERP systems: We investigate how machine learning, AI and modular cloud services can be embedded into enterprise systems to enhance operational agility, predictive insight and sustainable process management.
  • Enterprise education and industry-academia cooperation: Part of the team’s mission is to build training programmes, curricula and industry collaborations that link academic research with corporate needs, especially via the SAP University Alliances partnership.
  • Enterprise architecture, sustainability and innovation: We address how ERP systems and business process engineering can support sustainability goals (e.g., green IT, resource efficiency), and how emerging enterprise architectures (e.g., modular cloud-ERP) evolve in the Industry 4.0 context.

By combining rigorous data-science methods, advanced ERP technologies and business process engineering, the Enterprise Information Systems research area at our department aims to shape digital transformation in enterprise contexts. We collaborate closely with industry partners and SAP ecosystem stakeholders and welcome motivated students and external researchers to join thesis projects or joint initiatives in this domain.
